Influence of Soil Bulk Density on Soil Moisture

Soil bulk density is an important reference standard for describing the comprehensive nature of soil. Soil bulk density will affect the loss of soil nutrients, soil fertility, and soil moisture. Therefore, the study of soil bulk density has always been an issue of interest to us. Today we will discuss the effect of differences in soil bulk density on soil moisture. The main tools used are soil analyzers, which help us determine the moisture content of deep layers of different soils.

Soil bulk density is related to many factors such as soil texture, structure, elasticity and organic matter content. Under normal circumstances, small soil bulk density indicates that there are many soil pores, which are relatively loose and structurally sound, and the soil moisture, air, and heat are in good condition. The soil bulk density of the three dunes 0-80cm selected in this study is shown in Table 1.

The soil bulk density of three different types of sand dunes does not change much with depth. The soil bulk density of fixed dunes was significantly lower than that of the other two types of sand dunes. This may be due to the long time of vegetation colonization, obvious improvement of soil, and good soil structure. The mobile dunes are not significantly different from the mobile sand dunes with measures. It may be because the mobile sand dunes that took measures have taken a short time and have not caused changes in soil properties.

The change in soil water content with depth during the observation period is shown. It can be seen that the variation of the fixed sand dunes is the smallest at different depths, and the variation of the moisture content of the mobile dunes taking measures is the greatest. The water content of the surface dune of mobile sand dunes is relatively low, forming a dry sand layer, which effectively inhibits the evaporation of the underlying layer of water. Therefore, the water content below 10 cm is relatively high and basically remains at about 9%. The soil moisture content of mobile sand dunes with measures taken gradually decreased with depth. Below 40 cm, the water content close to the dry sand layer of the mobile sand dune may be due to the roots of seabuckthorn mainly distributed below 40 cm and the vegetation transpiration water consumption. Soil moisture in fixed dunes did not change significantly with depth, varying from 8.8% to 10.4%. The three kinds of sand dunes all have the highest soil moisture content of 10-20cm, probably because the single rainfall in this area is mostly below 10mm (41 rains during the observation period, 33 times less than 10mm rainfall, accounting for about 80%, and their rainfall accounts for (42% of the total rainfall), the supplement to soil moisture above 20cm is large, and the layer has a certain depth from the surface, the evaporation is relatively weak, and the root system is also generally distributed below 20cm, so the soil moisture content in this layer is the highest.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the 0-10cm water content in the surface layer of the mobile sand dune that has taken measures is higher than that of the mobile sand dunes, and no dry sand layer is formed. This shows that planting artificial vegetation on mobile sand dunes and laying sand barriers on wheat straw can increase surface soil content. The amount of water can effectively reduce wind erosion before vegetation recovery.
