PSA Peugeot Citroën Seeks Cooperation to Develop Air Hybrid Technology

According to the British car magazine Autocar on October 24th, Gilles LeBorgne, head of research and development of the Peugeot Citroen Group, said that the company’s cutting-edge technology, the HybridAir, is looking for partners because it is too expensive.

As the car moves forward with inertia, the air-compressed compressed gas and gasoline are converted into propulsion when the car accelerates again or climbs. The Peugeot 2008 prototype has used this technology, but at the recent Paris Motor Show, the Peugeot Citroen Group displayed the Peugeot 208 with this technology.

At the same time, the company also uses a hybrid power technology-based powertrain on its C4Cactus model to create the C4CactusAirflow2L concept vehicle.

The air hybrid system can help users save fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions by 30%. However, LeBorgne stated that about 500,000 vehicles must use this system each year to obtain economic benefits because the system includes a considerable number of components including hydraulic motors, special gearboxes and 300-bar fuel tanks, while the existing There are no such parts in the model. He also said that car companies are like big ships and need time to maximally change course.

Currently, the company is looking for suitable partners through its component supplier Bosch, but it is disappointing that there is no response. LeBorgne said that air hybrid technology is under development but it needs a large investment and the company is not able to develop it for the time being.
