Iraq's Network Operators Coming Soon to Launch 3G Networks

Iraq’s mobile phone network operators have agreed to pay $307 million for radio spectrum, enabling them to launch faster 3G mobile internet services within two months. Iraq is one of the few countries in the Middle East that still rely on 2G networks. 2G networks are mainly used to transmit voice calls and SMS texts. Only basic online services are available, and fixed-line Internet connections are expensive and unreliable. The three major mobile network operators have been waiting for 3G services for several years.
Informed sources said that the government wants companies to pay $ 307 million each for the radio frequency spectrum, which makes them feel frustrated. Khwaildi, head of the Communications and Media Commission, told reporters: "The company has now agreed to this fee and paid a $73 million down payment the previous few days. Companies will address the remaining four in the next 18 months. Period, and the first phase will be paid when the 3G contract is signed on November 10. Before the official launch of the 3G service, a two-month trial period will start. We hope this service will provide employment opportunities for a large number of people." Each operator paid $1.25 billion for a technology-neutral license in 2007 and received a 15-year license, which means they do not need a separate 3G license and only need the spectrum, but operators have previously opposed paying extra. The expenses, especially when their profits are retreating.
