Foreign environmental monitoring instruments have yet to be tested in China

Introduction: PM2.5, this once overwhelming word, quickly became popular in the last month of 2011, allowing ordinary people to expand their cognitive horizons and enhance environmental awareness. With the convening of the seventh environmental protection conference, PM2.5 has finally entered the air monitoring indicators. At the same time, the state has also formulated a plan with key, sub-regional, and step-by-step implementation.

The monitoring of PM2.5 was carried out to allow the relatively silent industry of environmental monitoring instruments to form a new blue ocean in China. Some reports pointed out that the two companies, the foreign-owned company Thermocraft and Hebei Xianhe Environmental Protection, accounted for about 60% of the market share in this area. In December of last year, the dispute between the U.S. Embassy and the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau over monitoring data made the air monitoring equipment suppliers once more concerned. Subsequent media pointed out that the huge difference between these data is due to the "systematic" error between different test equipment, and it is said that a certain company in the United States will not meet the foreign standards of oscillation balance method PM10, PM2.5 monitor The large number of sales in China has directly caused Beijing’s official monitoring data to be significantly lower.

It is not difficult for people who understand the environmental monitoring industry to guess that this company is Thermo Fisher. According to public information, Thermo Fisher Scientific (“TM”) is a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. At the beginning of December last year, Thermo Fisheries had already held a conference call to answer some questions that were of interest to the media on the hot topic PM2.5. Zhou Xiaobin, the company’s director of business affairs for the company’s environmental and process instrument division, introduced that currently domestic atmospheric monitoring stations usually only Equipped with a PM10 monitor, PM2.5 monitors are also installed in some cities' atmospheric monitoring stations for scientific research monitoring. In fact, many cities already have the ability to monitor PM2.5. For those environmental monitoring stations that do not have PM2.5 monitors, if they want to monitor PM2.5, they can only purchase one new PM2.5 monitoring instrument and cannot upgrade on the basis of the original PM10 monitor. After the introduction of the new national standard, the state will increase the monitoring index of PM2.5 on the basis of monitoring PM10, instead of replacing PM10 with PM2.5, both of which exist at the same time. Obviously, if you want to monitor PM2.5, you need to purchase new PM2.5 monitoring instruments. At the same time, Zhou Xiaobin also pointed out that domestic companies are also producing PM2.5 monitors, but the accuracy and effectiveness of the data obtained from monitoring instruments must pass national or international relevant certifications, such as EPA certification.

Today, a well-known international listed company's products sold in China are allegedly flawed and have "systematic" errors. How does the company explain this defect? What is the fault of the accused? To this end, the reporter called for a meeting with Zhou Xiaobin, but he did not find him. The woman who answered the phone informed him that “please contact the company’s marketing department for the certification of PM2.5 equipment”. As of press release, the marketing department’s telephone has been in a state of no answer.

It is understood that Thermo Fisher is a world-renowned instrument supplier, and its continuous monitoring system for air quality was earlier certified by the US EPA. This certification has undoubtedly become a passport for entering the Chinese market. “The US EPA certification requires that its PM2.5 monitor must be equipped with an FDMS system to compensate for the low measurement value of its products. However, Thermo Fisher Scientific still knows about the certification requirements and still has a large number of instruments that do not have this function installed. Domestic sales, its products do not meet the requirements of the certification. In short, the products sold by Thermo Fishery in China only have the A certificate in the certification, and lack the additional B certificate, so its product is defective.” According to industry insiders.

It is reported that the current price of the particle balance monitor of the oscillating balance method is 280,000 yuan per unit, which is equivalent to twice the imported instrument of the beta ray method and 3 times the price of the domestic instrument. This price does not include the FDMS function, such as adding this function. It will reach 380,000 yuan, which is equivalent to the price of a domestic air system. The implementation of PM2.5 monitoring will bring about a billion-dollar “pollution business”. The contest between Chinese and foreign investors has just ignited. The instruments of the old international giant Thermo Fisher have yet to be reviewed and tested.
