· SAIC's 250,000 vehicles will carry out the world's largest OTA upgrade

"Since the world's first Internet SUV Roewe RX5 was born 15 months ago, SAIC has a total of 250,000 Internet cars on the road and is changing the car."

On October 13, Wang Xiaoqiu, vice president of SAIC Group and general manager of SAIC passenger car, shared this number with the public at the Yunqi Conference in Hangzhou.

Looking at the history of SAIC's Internet car development, it can be said that it is developing rapidly. In July 2016, SAIC and Alibaba jointly built the Internet SUV Roewe RX5 to open up a new category of cars; in November 2016, SAIC launched the first plug-in hybrid Internet SUV Roewe eRX5; in February 2017, the first launch of the Internet car Roewe i6 In April 2017, the first plug-in hybrid ei6 sedan was launched; in June 2017, the first Internet-only electric SUV Roewe ERX5 was launched. Networking is being implemented on more and more car models.

According to Wang Xiaoqiu, SAIC will launch more Internet models in the future, and it will be upgraded quickly to ensure the vitality of Internet vehicles. At the same time, he said that light assets such as car software, interactive experience, data services, and autopilot have become the focus of future development of smart driving vehicles.

SAIC's 250,000 vehicles will carry out the world's largest OTA upgrade

Networked cars need big data support, while big data processing requires cloud support. SAIC’s huge base of Internet cars relies on Alibaba’s AliOS cloud. In the past year or so, SAIC’s various IoT models have undergone five over-the-air Cloud Upgrades (OTAs). In other words, users do not need to go to the repair shop or 4S shop to achieve automatic upgrade of some network connection functions.

Wang Xiaoqiu said that SAIC will carry out the sixth free OTA upgrade for 250,000 cars, which will be the world's largest cloud upgrade.

According to the staff told Sina Auto, these upgrades will be completed by the end of the year, and the upgraded vehicles will add new features such as social and self-driving tours.

“China has become the world's largest auto market eight years ago. If any technological innovation can't run in the Chinese auto market, then there is no opportunity in other markets, because innovation depends on huge market size verification,” said Wang Xiaoqiu.
