· Nissan Motors faces government "indefinite" surveillance

Due to the long-term use of unqualified personnel for vehicle safety inspection and rectification, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism decided to include Nissan Motor Co.'s new car factory inspection system in the monitoring target, with an indefinite period. During the period of surveillance, Nissan Motors must frequently submit inspections of all its factories to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reported on the 26th that it is rare for the government to issue an indefinite surveillance order to Nissan. The Mitsubishi Motors, which was exposed to the fuel consumption fraud scandal last year, is also strictly monitored by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, but the deadline is three years.
In September this year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism conducted a surprise inspection of the Nissan automobile manufacturing plant in Japan and found that it used unqualified personnel to carry out safety inspections of the factory. After the problem was exposed, Nissan Motor Co. did not undergo thorough rectification, and some unqualified inspectors in the factory were still on the job. Subsequent investigations also showed that Nissan Motors used the unqualified inspectors to “make up” the factory safety inspections in almost all domestic factories.
The safety inspection of the new car before leaving the factory should be the responsibility of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. However, in order to facilitate large-scale sales, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism allows manufacturers who have passed the new product type test to complete the factory inspection of each new car. An inspector holding a national qualification certificate is used to ensure that the results are authentic.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism believes that Nissan Motors uses a non-qualified inspector to “reject the trust of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism”. An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said: "Nissan’s behavior may harm the overall credibility of the Japanese auto industry, and it can only be dealt with seriously at this stage."
"Asahi Shimbun" said that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's specific monitoring methods for Nissan has not yet been determined, and Nissan Motors may be required to submit preventive measures and report frequently. In the future, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will also increase the intensity of spot checks on Nissan's factories and conduct more rigorous investigations.
Affected by the scandal, Nissan Motor has completely stopped shipments and new car registration procedures for six automakers in Japan.
