Lishui opens the green age of synthetic leather industry

Lishui City, Zhejiang Province is expected to restore the original appearance of green mountains and waters, and the problem of environmental pollution in the synthetic leather industry will be fundamentally resolved. On March 30th, Lishui Economic Development Zone held a ceremony to commission the production of a water synthetic leather production line for two synthetic leather companies, Zhejiang Fangyuan Artificial Leather Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Wuzhou Industrial Co., Ltd. This is the concrete result of the implementation of the "Framework Agreement on Water-based Synthetic Leather and Resin Cooperation" between Lishui Municipal Government and Bayer Company in December last year. According to the agreement, there will also be four technologically-renovated leather production companies that will implement oil-to-water technical transformation during the year. This is China's first water-based eco-synthetic leather production line. Experts in the industry believe that this move has opened the prelude to the green development of the synthetic leather industry, marking that China's synthetic leather industry will enter a new era.

In the past 20 years, the synthetic leather industry in China has been developing at a high speed, and its production capacity accounts for more than 80% of the total global synthetic leather production capacity. At present, the traditional oily technical route is widely used in China. The production process generates a large amount of organic waste gas, waste water and hazardous solid waste, and the energy consumption is large. China's synthetic leather industry is facing a dilemma of transformation and upgrading.

Lishui is a major town in China's synthetic leather industry, and synthetic leather is a pillar industry in the city. At present, Lishui Industrial Development Zone has set up 65 polymerization and upstream and downstream supporting enterprises. There are more than 120 production lines and the annual production capacity is about 500 million square meters. In 2010, the output value of synthetic leather in the development zone was over 140 billion yuan, accounting for the entire region. The total amount of industrial production is "half the country". What is of concern is that Lishui City, which accounts for 1/6 of the total area of ​​Zhejiang Province, has a beautiful forest coverage rate of 79.1%. It is a national-level ecological demonstration area and an excellent tourist city in China. It is known as “Zhejiang Green Valley” and “China’s Ecological First City, and many other good reputation. However, due to the development of the synthetic leather industry, it has had a great impact on the environment. The surrounding people have strongly called for the removal of “organic pollution”. Each year, the representatives of the two sessions will always propose a proposal that “we need economic development, but we must also be green and green”. . In this context, the Lishui Municipal Government has endeavored to explore the scientific development operating model of “local government support, innovation to overcome the source, and the enterprise to take courage”.

“To solve the environmental pollution problem of synthetic leather, we must not only focus on end-of-pipe management, but we must not shut down the company. The major scientific and technological special projects have made progress; in 2009, Zhejiang Youkenke and Dr. De Mei of Zhejiang established two water-based polyurethane resin production enterprises for synthetic leather to settle in the park to provide water-based resins for the enterprises in the region.

Lishui Municipal Government attaches great importance to the adoption of international advanced technology to promote the overall transformation and upgrading of the synthetic leather industry. In 2010, Cai Xiaohua, deputy mayor of Lishui City, and his team visited the Bayer Polymer Research and Development Center in Shanghai. After a comprehensive understanding of the environmental performance of water-soluble polyurethane resins, they decided to carry out strategic cooperation with Bayer MaterialScience. After the signing of the framework agreement, Bayer dispatched scientific and technical personnel to conduct research and research, providing high quality waterborne polyurethane resins for local synthetic leather companies, and also provided technical support and personnel training for enterprises.

At present, Lishui Industrial Development Zone has been awarded the demonstration base of circular economy in China's synthetic leather industry by China Plastics Processing Industry Association. Synthetic leather companies in the region have been involved in the application of water-based resins, and many attempts have been made to use aqueous resins in the veneering and spraying processes of existing production lines. Enterprises such as Zhejiang Fangyuan and Zhejiang Wuzhou, which have already been put into production, are using water-based resins as the raw materials for tanning, and they do not emit any toxic gases or liquids in the production process, and reduce the large amount of costs for recycling “three wastes”. At the same time, water-based resin synthetic leather, the film contains a large number of hydrophilic groups and microporous structure, has breathable, moisture permeability performance, processed into a product with the same touch and leather, is the real sense of the "green" products. According to statistics, the development zone has promoted the use of more than 5,000 tons of water-borne resin and more than 50 million meters of water-based synthetic leather.

Of course, Lishui City has also encountered new problems in promoting the overall transformation of the synthetic leather industry, mainly because the price of waterborne resin raw materials is higher than that of oil. If water-based synthetic leather is used in high-end shoes, bags, clothing and furniture, etc., because of its higher "cost-effectiveness", it can absorb higher raw material costs. At present, the synthetic leather products on the domestic market are still dominated by mid- to low-end products. If the synthetic cost of water-based resin synthetic leather is changed, it will be difficult to digest. Some companies that want to join the transformation and upgrading are in dilemma.

In response, the Lishui Economic Development Zone Management Committee recently issued a "Some Opinions on Further Promoting the Use of Waterborne Resins for Synthetic Leather," and proposed that it will classify and classify the use of water-based resins for synthetic leather production enterprises, giving them incentives and support; For the use of water-based resins, the need to transform production equipment or add new production line equipment will be determined in accordance with the relevant regulations of the municipal government, and energy-saving and emission-reduction projects will be recognized, and the corresponding technical innovation investment subsidies will be granted. On March 30th, the Lishui Municipal Government took advantage of Zhejiang Fangyuan and Zhejiang Wuzhou Water-based Projects to put into operation, and held an on-site conference to promote the use of synthetic resin for water-based synthetic leather. More than 40 synthetic leather companies from across the city attended the meeting and expressed confidence in product upgrading.

It is reported that Bayer MaterialScience will further assist Lishui to implement the ecological transformation of the synthetic leather industry from the aspects of technology, market and business, and give new support to cooperative enterprises. Mei Weihan, senior vice president of Bayer Coating Adhesives and Specialty Chemicals Asia Pacific, said that he will seek opportunities to organize the purchase of synthetic leather from the EU region to Lishui City to visit Lishui's water-based synthetic leather manufacturers and conduct procurement negotiations.
