Five Development Status of China's Tire Industry

In recent years, China’s economic development is undergoing unprecedented environmental changes. The development of the tire industry is also facing a new situation and has encountered some new problems.

At present, China is the world’s largest producer of automobiles. In 2014, the total automobile output reached 23.7 million; the total length of roads in the country exceeded 5 million kilometers, of which the total length of expressways reached 112,000 kilometers, and the volume of car traffic and passenger traffic were approximately respectively. It accounts for 60% and 70% of the national transportation volume; the popularity of cars has gradually increased, which has driven the long-term stable development of the domestic tire market.

China's tire industry faces five major developments
China's tire industry faces five major developments

The research group of the “Tire Labeling System Research” of the China Rubber Industry Association recently concluded five major developments in China's tire industry.

First, the steady increase in market size has slowed down, and the economic operation of the industry is facing challenges

In the global tire production, the United States has been at the top for many years, followed by Japan. However, in recent years, the rapid development of China’s economy has brought the tire industry to a new level. In 2006, China’s tire production reached 285 million, which surpassed 223 million in the United States. Since then, it has maintained this advantage and has ranked first in the world for 10 consecutive years. Bit.

In 2010, the production and sales volume of China's tire industry increased by nearly 15%. Subsequently, due to the rapid expansion of the industry in 2008-2011, the structural overcapacity was severe and the development of the tire industry entered the structural adjustment period. Since 2011, the growth rate of the Chinese tire industry has been slowing down, and the overall growth of the industry has remained at 5%-10%.

Since 2015, due to various factors, the tire industry has begun to show negative growth.

Second, the increasingly fierce competition among enterprises has accelerated the pace of mergers and reorganizations.

In China, the total number of tire manufacturers above designated size exceeds 500, and about 300 manufacturing companies have passed the “CCC” compulsory product safety certification. At present, there are about 40 foreign-funded tire companies in China, and their production accounts for nearly half of the total tire production in the country. Car tires account for 70% of the domestic market, and load-carrying tires account for 20% of the total.

Third, product technology is facing the pressure of upgrading, environmental protection, energy saving and consumption reduction become an inevitable trend

According to the survey results, about 30% of domestic tires have not yet met the EU's first phase standards; about 50% do not meet the EU's second phase standards. Since 40% of the domestic tire market depends on exports, international technical barriers force companies to upgrade their products.

In the domestic market, the overcapacity of medium- and low-end products in domestic-funded enterprises is serious; the high-end products are dominated by foreign-funded enterprises, and the market is in short supply; leading domestic-funded enterprises are actively seeking transformation to compete for more market share.

Vehicle OEMs are bound by mandatory policies such as national fuel consumption limits and exhaust emission control. Coupled with increasing consumer demand for complete vehicle performance, high-performance, energy-saving and environmentally friendly tire products have become an important part of the complete vehicle system. .

National level also attaches great importance to green tires, and relevant policies will focus on exerting force to guide or force the development of the tire industry.

IV. Significant synergies between upstream and downstream industries

Tire enterprises take the vehicle product requirements and market demand as the first principle. In accordance with the technical development requirements for complete vehicles and tire products, structural design, material formula innovation, simultaneous development and complementary cooperation with upstream and downstream companies, and the formation of strategic technology alliances are the driving forces for domestic tire companies to occupy the technical commanding height and maintain market competitiveness. The important foundation.

In terms of rubber raw materials, in addition to natural rubber, synthetic rubber varieties have been filled more fully during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, especially butyl rubber and halogenated butyl rubber for tires, polybutadiene-butadiene rubber, isoprene rubber, and rare earth The total production capacity of synthetic rubber such as butyl rubber has reached 5 million tons. Even if the proportion of synthetic rubber used in tires is increased from the current 40% to 60%, domestic synthetic rubber can basically meet the market demand. In addition, skeletal materials, carbon black, and additives can basically meet the tire production needs.

In terms of equipment, from the point of view of traditional craftsmanship, from the refining equipment to the vulcanization and even testing equipment, domestic equipment can basically meet the demand for production, and in the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the level of research and development has been greatly improved. The 13th Five-Year Plan has laid a good foundation for development.

V. The State Strengthens the Guidance of Regulatory System

In recent years, the national competent authorities have gradually realized that behind the rapid development of the tire industry, there are invisible contradictions that affect the healthy and sustainable development of the industry. Therefore, the introduction of guiding macroeconomic policies and mandatory regulatory regulations, such as the “Environmental Protection Act”, “ Tire Industry Policy, Tire Industry Access Conditions, etc., to strengthen the guidance and management of the tire industry.
