China Drying Network News LANXESS, the German specialty chemicals group, announced that its world's largest EPDM plant broke ground in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. With a total investment of 235 million euros (approximately 1.85 billion yuan), the plant is by far the largest single investment project of LANXESS in China.
LANXESS stated that the new plant has obtained all necessary permits and it is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2015. The factory designed an annual production capacity of 160,000 tons and created 200 jobs. This factory is the third largest rubber investment project of LANXESS in Asia. In the first quarter of 2013, LANXESS's new world-class butyl rubber plant in Jurong Island, Singapore will be completed and put into operation. On September 11 this year, LANXESS will also build a new tan butadiene rubber plant beside this factory.
The new plant is located in Binjiang Industrial Park, Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. A methanol-to-olefin (MTO) plant under construction in the park will supply LANXESS with its main raw materials, ethylene and propylene. LANXESS is currently building a new leather chemicals plant in Changzhou with a total investment of 30 million euros. The designed annual production capacity is 50,000 tons, and it is expected to be completed and put into operation in the first half of 2013.
After successfully acquiring DSM's elastomer business in 2011, LANXESS has become the world's leading supplier of EPDM rubber. In the coming years, the global demand for EPDM rubber is expected to increase at a rate of more than 4% per year. While China is driven by the automotive and construction industries, the demand growth rate will reach 8%. Lanxess expects that China will remain the world's largest importer of EPDM rubber in the next few years.
