In mid-June, the Canadian government issued an announcement that plans to add mercury compounds to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999) list of toxic substances in order to strengthen the management of mercury compounds. This announcement will receive 60 days of public comment.
Mercury is a substance in the list of toxic substances in Appendix I of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999), and mercury compounds are not included in this list. There is sufficient evidence that the release of mercury and its compounds into the environment can have a significant negative impact on human health and the environment. Therefore, environmentalists propose to replace “mercury†in Article 8 of Appendix I with “mercury and its compounds†so that the Canadian government can take further actions to manage mercury and its compounds in the future.
