A study published on the preprinted server arXiv recently showed that artificial intelligence is helping researchers discover malignant ovarian cancer.
Yinyin Yuan and colleagues at the London Cancer Institute in the United Kingdom used artificial intelligence to find differences in the shape of tumor cells. They analyzed tissue samples from 514 female ovarian cancer patients and found that malformed nuclei were associated with a more malignant form of the disease (5-year survival rate of 15%).
Scientists are very good at studying cells, but quantifying the differences between cells is very difficult and takes a lot of time. Yuan said that because of this, they used artificial intelligence.
However, Kevin Elias of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, USA, believes that the application of the above tests is currently limited. “It’s one thing to tell me that a patient’s results can be terrible, but if you can’t come up with alternative therapies, it’s useless.â€
In cancer research, artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to screen data to help medical workers in various ways, such as tracking tumor changes and improving diagnosis.
Next, Yuan and his team will use artificial intelligence to study cancers that are resistant to chemotherapy, thereby developing more targeted therapies.
