According to an overseas media report on May 17, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said in Lima on May 16 that due to record high oil prices that are hurting the economy of poor countries, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) should consider Increase its oil production.
President Correa made the above remarks to media reporters during the leaders’ summit in Europe and Latin America held in Lima, Peru. He told Reuters: "I think OPEC must deal with the issue of high oil prices because this issue is hitting all the poorest countries, and these poorest countries are oil importing countries."
Correa said that in OPEC member countries, such as Ecuador, the high oil price issue is one of the factors causing inflation worldwide, and this kind of inflation will also harm the people of the poorest countries.
Ecuador, the member of OPEC, is the fifth largest oil producer in South America, and Ecuador currently produces about 500,000 barrels of oil per day.
Correa added that in order to find a solution to the problem of high oil prices, the dialogue between oil-producing and consumer countries must continue as always. This issue has now been put on the agenda of the leaders’ summit in Europe and Latin America. This issue was seriously discussed by the participants.
