Bosch to invest 770 million to establish Asia Pacific's first iBooster production site

On August 1, 2017, Bosch Asia Pacific's first intelligent booster iBooster production base broke ground in Nanjing. The project has a total investment of 770 million yuan (100 million euros) and covers an area of approximately 22,000 square meters. It is planned to be put into production in 2019. According to relevant plans, the project plans to build two production lines with an initial production capacity of 400,000 and will reach 300 million by 2024.

According to the relevant person in charge of the group, Bosch iBooster products were put on the market in 2013 and initially supplied mainly to electric vehicles. In recent years, with the rapid development of new energy vehicles and autonomous driving, the product should be the trend of the times and the demand gradually increase. Bosch launched its second-generation product in 2015, which can be applied to all powertrain solutions. The main users include Volkswagen, General Motors and Tesla, with a total shipment of 1.7-1.8 million units.

So what exactly is iBooster? Why does Bosch set up a plant alone and how optimistic is its forecast for China's development prospects?

It is understood that iBooster is exactly a new type of brake booster solution. It uses the sensor to sense the driver's strength and speed of depressing the brake, and the signal is processed and then transmitted to the motor in the brake pump. Under the drive of the electromechanical amplification mechanism, the brake pump is driven to achieve electric control.

The biggest advantage of this product is that it does not rely on vacuum sources. In China, the hybrid and pure electric vehicle market is rapidly developing. However, modern internal combustion engines and electric vehicles cannot provide enough vacuum for the conventional vacuum brake booster. They can only be solved by using a vacuum pump, and the braking effect is unsatisfactory. The iBooster solution does not rely on vacuum sources and can solve this problem in a targeted manner.

In addition, iBooster is also an assistant in energy saving and emission reduction. When cooperating with ESP®hev, it can achieve almost 100% recovery of braking energy, which not only can increase the mileage of electric vehicles by up to 20%, but also effectively reduce Hybrid fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

In the area of driving assistance and automatic driving, iBooster's high dynamic decompression performance provides a significant advantage for the automatic emergency braking system and can meet the requirements of NCAP in the future. In an emergency situation, iBooster can quickly obtain the required brake pressure, which significantly reduces the braking distance during emergency automatic braking and effectively improves driving safety. If the collision is unavoidable, it will also help reduce the impact speed and the risk of injury. In combination with ESP®, iBooster can provide redundant braking systems for autonomous driving, both of which can be directly mechanically actuated on the brake and can independently brake the vehicle throughout the entire deceleration range.

From all these points of view, it is not difficult to understand Bosch's greatness.

As the world's leading supplier, Bosch has continuously increased investment in the three major new technologies in automation, interconnection, and electrification in recent years. For the fast growing Chinese market, overall investment is more intensive, according to Bosch (China) Investment Limited. According to Dr. Xu Daquan, executive vice president of the company, Bosch's total investment in China last year reached 3 billion yuan. Dirk Hoheisel Bosch, member of the Board of Directors of the Bosch Group, also stated: “China is the world’s largest automotive market. To meet China’s growing demand for electrified and automated driving solutions, Bosch is committed to continuing investment and introducing our latest technologies to China. We will continue to enhance our local competitiveness in China so as to provide customized products and services to Chinese customers.”
